Most people have one or two things about their smile that they'd change if they could. Maybe a tooth that chipped years ago, a gap that's always drawn attention, or a general dullness that no amount of whitening has shifted. Dental veneers are the treatment that addresses all of those things in one go - and done well, the results are remarkable.
At Dr Rez Dental in Liverpool, veneers are one of our most requested treatments. Here's everything you need to know before you decide if they're right for you.
What are dental veneers?
A veneer is a thin facing, usually made from porcelain or a tooth-coloured composite material, that is bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Think of it as a precisely crafted shell that changes the colour, shape, length, or surface of a tooth while leaving the underlying structure largely intact.
They're most commonly used on the teeth that show when you smile - typically the upper front six to eight - though they can be applied wherever a visible improvement is needed. The result is a natural-looking, uniform smile that holds up to everyday life.
Porcelain veneers vs composite veneers: what's the difference?
Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory from high-strength ceramic. They're typically thinner than a contact lens, extraordinarily lifelike, and resistant to staining. They mimic the translucency of natural enamel in a way that's genuinely hard to tell apart from real teeth. They last on average ten to fifteen years with proper care, and in many cases considerably longer.
Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the tooth from a resin material during a single appointment. They're generally less expensive and require no waiting period for a laboratory, but they don't match the strength or stain resistance of porcelain. With good care they can last five to seven years.
The right choice depends on your goals, your budget, and the condition of your teeth. At Dr Rez, we'll assess both options honestly with you during your consultation so you can make the decision that fits your life.
What can dental veneers fix?
Discolouration that whitening won't budge. Deep internal staining from tetracycline antibiotics, fluorosis, or old root canal treatments doesn't respond to bleaching. Veneers cover it completely.
Chipped or worn teeth. A single chipped tooth can draw the eye away from an otherwise excellent smile. A veneer restores its shape and matches the surrounding teeth so well that nobody would know it had ever been damaged.
Gaps between teeth. Veneers can close small to moderate spaces without the need for orthodontic treatment - though we'll always advise whether straightening first would give a better long-term result.
Slightly misaligned or uneven teeth. For teeth that are mildly crooked or irregular, veneers can create the appearance of perfect alignment. Where there is significant crowding or bite misalignment, orthodontics is usually the more appropriate first step.
Does the treatment damage your teeth?
With traditional porcelain veneers, a small amount of tooth enamel - typically around half a millimetre - needs to be removed from the front surface of the tooth. Once that enamel has been removed, it doesn't grow back, which means veneers are considered a permanent commitment.
Minimal-prep and no-prep veneers do exist; these are ultra-thin designs that require little or no removal of enamel. They're not suitable for every case, but where they are an option we'll discuss them with you. Composite veneers typically require no enamel removal at all.
What does the treatment process look like at Dr Rez?
It usually takes two to three appointments over a few weeks. The first is your consultation, where we assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and plan your treatment using digital smile design technology. You'll be able to see a simulation of your result before any treatment begins.
If you're having porcelain veneers, the second appointment involves preparing the teeth, taking precise digital impressions, and fitting temporary veneers while your permanent ones are crafted in the laboratory. The final appointment is the fit. For composite veneers, the whole process is typically completed in a single appointment.
How long do veneers last, and how do you care for them?
Porcelain veneers are remarkably durable. Most patients get a decade or more from them. At Dr Rez, every veneer patient is part of our ongoing care programme. We recommend a dental hygiene appointment every three to six months to keep gums healthy and veneers looking their best. We'll also recommend a night guard if you grind your teeth, as this is one of the most common reasons veneers fail prematurely.
How much do veneers cost in Liverpool?
The cost varies depending on how many teeth you're treating, whether you choose porcelain or composite, and the complexity of your case. We offer 0% interest-free finance for up to twelve months, as well as longer-term finance options. The best way to get an accurate figure is to book a free consultation at our Liverpool practice, where we'll create a detailed treatment plan with transparent pricing before anything begins.

FAQs
Do veneers hurt to get?
The preparation process is done under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn't feel anything during the procedure. Some sensitivity in the days following preparation is normal and usually resolves quickly.
Can I whiten my teeth with veneers?
Veneers don't respond to whitening treatment. If you're thinking about whitening, it's best to do it before your veneers are fitted so the surrounding teeth can be matched to your preferred shade.
Will my veneers look obvious?
Not with a well-executed treatment plan. At Dr Rez Dental, every veneer is crafted to complement your natural features - the right shade, shape, and size for your face.
How soon can I get veneers?
Following your consultation and any preparatory treatment, most patients begin their veneer preparation appointment within a few weeks. Same-day composite veneers are available in some cases.
Been a Dr. Rez patient for around 4 years now. From initially needing a lot of work done to now just regular check ups and cleaning. I can confidently say it's been one of my best decisions. From being a very nervous patient to now quite enjoying my appointment (relatively anyway ha). Currently my therapist is Lilly, very ably assisted by Mel and they couldn't be more encouraging, thoughtful and nice. I get great advice and couldn't feel better looked after. Couldn't recommend more.
